Anytime you have unprotected sex, there is the risk of pregnancy. However, the amount of risk does depend on your time within your menstrual cycle.

It is common for women to have cramping prior to starting their period. Some women may have other signs of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), too, like breast tenderness, moodiness, and tiredness. Usually over the counter medications like Tylenol, Ibuprofen or Midol help decrease these discomforts.

If you are within the last few days of your menstrual cycle, meaning about 7 days prior to your period, your risk of pregnancy is decreased. (But not zero!) This is the time within the menstrual cycle when most women are least fertile.

If your next period is more than 1 week late, do a pregnancy test.

i am currently taking amoxicillin and had sex with my boyfriend and now he has a rash. what could this be?

In order for your boyfriend to be having an allergic reaction, he would have to be taking the medication. I am not aware of any cases where Amoxicillin would be in the vaginal secretions. If so, the amount would be very insignificant. If his rash continues, he should be seen by his family doctor. In the meantime, until you know if the rash is communicable, if may be wise to avoid intimate contact.

Anytime a man and woman have sex, there is a risk of pregnancy. However, in the scenario you describe, pregnancy would not be likely.

Thank you so much for following instructions! You should be fully cured since you waited the full week before having sex. To prevent becoming infected again, only have sex with one another. If either of you do have sex with someone else, be sure to use a condom to reduce your risk of infection.

This is my first month on birth control. I got my period one week before my placebo pills start. Am I going to get my period during the placebo pills (next week) as well? If not, is it safe for me to have sex while on the placebo pills?

During the first few months of birth control pill use, menstrual irregularities are common, and you may or may not have bleeding during your placebo pills. It’s important that you remember to take your pills at the same time every day for maximum protection. As long as you have been taking your pills on time and as long as you’ve finished at least one week of hormone pills, you will have continual contraceptive protection (even when taking your placebo pills). The most important pill to remember, however, is always the first hormone pill in your new pack. If you forget that pill, you are extending your hormone free period which may lower your hormone levels and allow you to ovulate (release an egg).

Of course, no birth control method is 100% effective and so pregnancy is always a possibility. However, as long as you are taking your pills as directed, your risk of pregnancy is extremely low.

Plan B works by rapidly elevating hormone levels to delay ovulation (the monthly release of an egg) for a few days. It must be used within 120 hours after unprotected sex, but works best when it is used within the first 24 hours after sex. The sooner you use it, the better. Plan B is available over the counter at most drug stores to individuals 17 or older. You do have to ask the pharmacist for Plan B as it is located behind the counter, and you may have to show ID to prove your age. It costs about $50. If you are under 17, you will need a prescription. Plan B is not meant to be used for multiple sex acts that take place over several days, nor is it meant to be used frequently. Rather, it is meant to be used in emergency situations when your regular birth control fails (for example, your condom breaks) or when you slip up and simply don’t use contraception. Plan B works by quickly changing your body’s hormone levels which then delays ovulation (the monthly release of an egg) by a few days. You should use Plan B as soon as possible after the unprotected sex. If you happened to ovulate before or somewhere in the middle of your multiple sex acts, Plan B probably would not have worked and you may become pregnant. However, Plan B may also have some effect on preventing fertilization and implantation. Plan B is not 100% effective, but it can reduce your risk of pregnancy.

If you skip your next period, take a pregnancy test. Repeat the test every two weeks until you have a normal period or a positive test result.
