Depo-Provera is immediately effective as long as you get your first shot within the first five days of your period.

Your period might be late because of the change in hormones, however, you could also be pregnant. Since you are over a week late, take a pregnancy test. If it is negative, repeat the test every two weeks until you have a normal period or a positive test result.

If you are not planning a pregnancy, please use condoms or contact your medical care provider to discuss other contraceptive options.

If you took your last active birth control pill (last hormone pill of the third week of your pill pack) on March 1st and you started a new pack on March 6th, you would have been protected. However, if you took your last sugar pill (last pill of the fourth week) on March 1st and you started a new pack on March 6th, you would not have been protected.

i had sex yesterday the day before i received my depo shot, should i be worried about pregnancy?

Comments Off on i had sex yesterday the day before i received my depo shot, should i be worried about pregnancy?

If you have been on the shot for a while and you have been getting your shots on time, you need not be concerned about pregnancy. If this was your first Depo shot or if you are restarting Depo and you received your shot during the first five days of your period, you need not be concerned about pregnancy. However, if this was your first Depo shot or you are restarting Depo and you did not receive your shot during the first five days of your period, then pregnancy is possible and we would recommend that you use Plan B as soon as possible.

If you are 17 or older, you can purchase Plan B at most drug stores without a prescription. You will need to ask the pharmacist for Plan B as it is located behind the counter. You may also need to show ID to prove your age. Plan B is around $50. If you are under 17, you will need a prescrition from a doctor. You can also get Plan B from a Family Plannning or Planned Parenthood clinic…

could i be pregnant because i was on depo provera and antibiotics and the condom broke?

Comments Off on could i be pregnant because i was on depo provera and antibiotics and the condom broke?

While it is possible to become pregnant while on Depo and antibiotics, it is highly unlikely.  If you are extremely concerned about this, you can take a pregnancy test approximately five weeks after the incident.

The effectiveness of any type of hormonal birth control method may be impaired during treatment with antibiotics.  However, the risk is very slight, and the supportive evidence is primarily limited to anecdotes from case reports.  In fact, according to Contraceptive Technology, 19th Edition, it is not necessary to use a back up method of birth control while on antibiotics because they do not lower the levels of hormones in your system to the point that you would be at risk for pregnancy.  The only exception is the medication, rifampin (which is primarily used to treat tuberculosis).   To be on the safe side, however, we do recommend the use of condoms or sexual abstinence during antibiotic treatment and for at least one week after.

However, for future reference, the following drugs or herbal products can decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives:

barbiturates
bosentan
carbamazepine
felbamate
griseofulvin
oxcarbazepine
phenytoin
rifampin
St. John’s wort
topiramate
HIV protease inhibitors or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors

What are the chances of being pregnant while on birth control and not missing your last period two weeks ago? I have sore nipples/breasts, abdomen soreness, lower back pain and fatigue. When I eat i can only eat a little at a time and then im so full feeling. Am I pregnant?

Pregnancy is extremely unlikely if you are using a hormonal method of birth control (pill, patch, ring, shot, implant, Mirena IUD) and since you have recently had a period. If you just started a new hormonal method, the symptoms you described are very typical side effects of these methods during the first few months of use. However, if you miss your next period, take a pregnancy test just in case. If you have been on your method for six months or longer and the symptoms you described do not go away, or if your symptoms worsen (regardless of how long you have been using you method), contact your medical provider.

I missed my depo shot on feb 21 2012 and had unprotected sex on the 25th and 28th…could it be possible that I could become pregnant even though I have been bleeding since the 21st of feb?

Comments Off on I missed my depo shot on feb 21 2012 and had unprotected sex on the 25th and 28th…could it be possible that I could become pregnant even though I have been bleeding since the 21st of feb?

Even though Depo shots are usually scheduled 12 weeks apart, the contraceptive effect of the shot lasts 13 weeks. Find out the date of your last injection and count forward 13 weeks. If the dates of your intercourse fell before the end of the 13 weeks, you were still protected by the shot. If the dates fell after the end of the 13 weeks, you were not protected. However, even if this is the case, pregnancy is highly unlikely because of your bleeding.

Contact the medical provider who gave you your last injection to discuss how you will prevent pregnancy now. If you simply missed your shot and you would like to continue using the shot, he or she can help you restart the method. If you were unhappy with the shot, he or she can talk with you about other options. In the meantime, either abstain from sexual intercourse or use condoms from start to finish for every sexual act.

Though condoms can reduce the risk for genital herpes, they do not eliminate the risk – that’s because condoms don’t always cover all of the infected area. If you now have genital herpes, please contact your regular medical care provider for an appointment. He or she may want to perform a test to confirm the diagnosis and may provide you with a prescription.

Though there is no cure for genital herpes, antiviral medication can be taken to shorten the length and severity of an outbreak. It can also be used as a daily suppressive to help prevent outbreaks from occurring and to decrease the likelihood of transmission. Suppressive therapy is recommended for anyone who has frequent outbreaks, is bothered by their outbreaks, or who has an uninfected partner.

During the first year of infection, you can expect approximately four to six outbreaks. Usually, a person will have the most outbreaks during the first year. The number of outbreaks tends to decrease with time. Hence, the longer you are infected, the fewer outbreaks you will have.

To relieve symptoms during an outbreak, wear loose…

My period ha skipped a month and havent gotten it this month. Me and my bf used a condom and did the pull out method too. I took 7 pregnancy tests so far and they all said negative. But still no period! What is wrong?!

Menstrual irregularities (including missed periods) can occur for a number of different reasons. Pregnancy is just one possibility.  Irregular periods can be caused by hormonal imbalances, perimenopause, illness or infection, use of certain medications, and other more serious conditions.  Women who are dieting or exercising excessively may also skip periods. In addition, increased stress levels and changes in routine may affect the regularity of menstrual cycles.  If you have skipped more than one period andyou are not using a progestin-only method of birth control, you should probably be evaluated by a medical professional to determine the cause.

The last day of my period was on the 6th of January and I had unprotected sex on the 17th of February, I missed my periods this month. Am I pregnant?

14. March 2012

Comments Off on The last day of my period was on the 6th of January and I had unprotected sex on the 17th of February, I missed my periods this month. Am I pregnant?

Whenever you have unprotected sex, pregnancy is possible. Since you are already late for your period, take a pregnancy test. If it is negative, repeat the test every two weeks until you have a normal period or a positive test result.

In the meantime, if you do not wish to be pregnant, do not continue to have unprotected sex. Either abstain from sex or use a method of birth control. If you live near one of our offices, please call us for an appointment. We can talk with you about all of your contraceptive options and help you choose a method that’s best for you. If you live further away, contact the Family Planning or Planned Parenthood office closest to you.
