If you mean you are 13 weeks pregnant, then you should immediately remove the NuvaRing. Hormonal methods should not be used during pregnancy.

If you are worried about whether or not the NuvaRing will cause birth defects. Studies do not show an increased risk of birth defects in babies whose mothers used hormones during early pregnancy.

If you are pregnant, follow these recommendations to help ensure a healthy pregnancy outcome:

  • Schedule a prenatal appointment with a medical provider of your choice as soon as possible and be sure to receive regular prenatal care.
  • Begin taking a daily multivitamin with 400 mcg of folic acid ( a B vitamin that prevents birth defects of the brain and spine).
  • Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Do not use street drugs, and check with a doctor before using prescription or over-the-counter medications (some medications are not safe to use during pregnancy).
  • Eat healthfully and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Reduce the amount of stress in your life (if possible).
  • Get regular exercise.  Walking, swimming, stretching, and housework are all good exercise choices before and during pregnancy.

If you mean that you’ve had your NuvaRing in for 13 weeks, please realize that the contraceptive effects of NuvaRing work for four weeks only. Remove the NuvaRing right away. If you have not had a period during this time, take a pregnancy test. Contact the provider who prescribed your NuvaRing for further instruction about restarting the method.
