As long as your partner is taking her birth control pills correctly & consistently, she is protected. However, if she has been on antibiotics to treat her food poisoning, then the pills may not be as effective. Some antibiotics can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. We recommend using condoms or abstinence while taking the antibiotics and for at least 7 days after completion of the medication.
If you partner is having diarrhea due to a stomach virus, her pills would continue to be effective, as long as she continued to take them every day. It is important for your partner to increase her fluids to prevent dehydration.
