Yes, you are correct. You must be at least 3-5 weeks pregnant before a home pregnancy test would detect a positive pregnancy. If you had sex with someone on Friday, and had a positive pregnancy test on Sunday, it was not from Friday’s sexual activity. You would have become pregnant sometime in January.
