The most common reason for “bad” vaginal odor is a vaginal infection. Vaginal infections, like yeast and bacterial vaginosis are common. These are not sexually transmitted infections, so your partner would not need treatment.
Vaginal infections can occur when the vaginal pH becomes unbalanced. Several things can alter the vaginal pH. Things like periods, sex, illness, medications, or irritation from clothes, soaps, pads, etc. can cause an infection.
Yeast infections are characterized by thick, white cottage cheese like discharge that usually has no odor. There is typically intense itching in and around the vaginal area. Yeast infections are treated with over the counter anti-fungal medications (Monistat, Clotrimazole). Bactreial vaginosis exhibits as a thin, white, milky discharge that has a “fishy” odor. This odor may be more noticiable after intercourse or showering. There may be vaginal burning or discomfort with urination. BV is diagnosed by a doctor through an infection check. It is treated with an antibiotic.
Sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea can also cause abnormal vaginal discharge and odor. If this is a concern, consider having an STD screening done.
