Anytime you have unprotected intercourse, there is the risk of pregnancy. However, the level of risk can depend on where you’re at within your menstrual cycle.

If you have unprotected intercourse during your ovulatory time, which is when you’re most fertile, then the risk of pregnancy would be high. If you have unprotected sex during your least fertile time, which is usually the few days prior to and the days during your period, the risk would be lower. Bleeding after intercourse does not affect whether or not a pregnancy occurs.

Although he did not ejaculate inside you, there is still the risk of pregnancy. During sexual arousal, the penis leaks a small amount of pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum), which can contain sperm.

If you are not planning a pregnancy, consider beginning a reliable, long term method of birth control. Condoms, birth control pills, patch, vaginal ring and the DepoProvera injection can all be very effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly and consistently.
