If there is unusual vaginal discharge that is accompanied by a foul odor, you probably have some type of vaginal infection. Though you were checked a few weeks ago for STDs, you might want to be checked again, just in case you were recently infected.
However, you may have a very common infection called bacterial vaginosis (BV), which is basically an overgrowth of the harmful bacteria in the vagina. Normally, the vagina contains mostly good bacteria and fewer harmful bacteria. BV develops when there is an increase in harmful bacteria. It is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age, and is sometimes accompanied by a white or gray discharge, a strong fishy odor, pain, itching, and burning. BV is diagnosed by examining a specimen of vaginal fluid under a microscope, and it is treatable with antibiotics.
If you live near one of our offices, please call us for an appointment for a free STD screening. At your visit, we can take a vaginal smear to look under the microscope for the presence of BV, Trich, or yeast. If you are interested in delaying parenthood, we can also discuss your contraceptive options. If you live further away, please contact the STD clinic, Family Planning, or Planned Parenthood office closest to you.
