A bilateral tubal ligation is a surgery that provides women with a permanent method of birth control. It is sometimes referred to as “tying my tubes”, “burning tubes”, or “clamping tubes”. During the surgery, the doctor will usually remove a small portion of each fallopian tube, and “burn” each end. The resulting scar tissue causes blockage of the fallopian tubes.
Tubal ligation is more than 99% effective. It is considered permanent. Although it has occurred, it is rare that the tubes would grow back together.
Some gynecologists and fertility specialists are able to do surgery to reverse a woman’s tubal ligation. The success rate of the reversal depends on the length of time since the tubal, length of the remaining portion of tube, your age, weight gain and other factors. A successful reversal does not guarantee that pregnancy or a live birth will occur.
If you & your partner have further questions, make an appointment with a doctor that specializes in fertility.
