I’m 22 and I had intercourse with a guy about a week ago and everything was fine, we have since had sex 6 or so times. For the last 2-3 days the external parts of vagina and clitoris have just been irritated and itchy-like. It is just uncomfortable especially when using toilet paper and the last time i had sex. I have no unusual discharge, odor, or burning while urinating either. I am in school away from home, so i was hoping that you could let me know what was wrong, if anything, so that I dont have to go to the OBGYN. Thank you

Vaginal yeast infections are characterized by a white, thick, cottage-cheese like vaginal discharge that has no unusual odor. Commonly, there is intense itching and irritation around and/or inside the vagina. You may want to consider trying an over the counter yeast cream (Monistat 7, Clotrimazole). Use as directed by the package insert, but most creams recommend 1 applicatorful inside the vagina before bed every night for 7 nights. You may also apply a small amount of the cream to the affected areas on your labia.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection that can cause thin, white, milky discharge that has a “fishy” odor, especially after intercourse.  BV may cause external irritation and burning with urination. Yeast medications do not treat BV. Because BV is caused by a bacteria, it requires an antibiotic for treatment.

If you decide to try the over the counter yeast medication and it does not resolve your discomfort, or if your discomfort worsens, see your gynecologist for an infection check.
