Pregnancy is definitely a possibility in the scenario you described. The only way to know for sure is for your girlfriend to take a pregnancy test if she is more than a week late for her next period.
The likelihood of pregnancy is dependent on a number of different factors. Generally, if the sex occurred around the time of her ovulation (about two weeks prior to her next period if she has regular 28 day cycles), pregnancy is more likely. If it occurred just before, during, or just after her period, pregnancy is less likely. If you are worried about your girlfriend becoming pregnant, suggest that she use Plan B (the morning after pill).
Plan B One-Step is a hormone pill that prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex by delaying ovulation (the monthly release of an egg). It can be used up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex, but works best if it is used within 24 hours of sex. The sooner it is used, the better.
If you are 17 or older, you can purchase Plan B for her at most drug stores without a prescription. You will need to ask the pharmacist for Plan B as it is located behind the counter. You may also need to show ID to prove your age. Plan B is around $50. If you and your girlfriend are under 17, she will need a prescription from a doctor. Your girlfriend can also get Plan B from a Family Planning or Planned Parenthood clinic. We offer Plan B at all of our clinics. If you live nearby, you may want to call us for an appointment.
