If you are taking your birth control pills correctly & consistently, it is unlikely that you would become pregnant, even if your partner ejaculates inside you.
Theoretically, the birth control pill is 99% effective. Real life effectiveness rate is around 95%. Real life rate is lower because some women either do not take their pills or do not take them correctly. Most “good” pill users (taking your pill every day) can achieve an effectiveness rate of 98-99%. Frequently missing pills or taking them late will decrease the effectiveness. Some antibiotics will also decrease your birth control. Therefore, the more diligent you are with every day pill use, the better your protection will be.
At Family Planning Plus, we do recommend using condoms as a back up method for the pill in a few instances. If you frequently miss your pills, then using condoms regularly is probably a good habit to get into. If you have missed more than 2 pills in a row, abstinence or a condom should be used for the rest of the pill pack. During antibiotic therapy, abstainence/condom should be used during the time you’re on the antibiotics and until 7 days after completion of the antibiotics.
