Anytime you have unprotected intercourse, there is the risk of pregnancy.
Prior to beginning the DepoProvera injection, most clinicians will try to detect whether or not you are pregnant. Some providers give the first injection only when the woman is currently having her period, or is within 5 days after her period. If the women is not having her period, others may give the first injection as long as there is a negative pregnancy test, and there has been no unprotected sex within the past two weeks. Still, others may give the injection anytime within the menstrual cycle as long as there is a negative pregnancy test. Each way is acceptable and will depend on your doctor or clinic.
If you feel that you are pregnant, do a home pregnancy test, or ask the clinic to run a test prior to your next scheduled injection. There is no evidence that the Depo injection causes termination of pregnancy or that it harms a fetus.
