If you had unprotected sex, Plan B would be a good option. Plan B helps prevent pregnancy by delaying ovulation. It is most effective when taken within 24 to 72 hours after unprotected sex. Studies do show that Plan B can be effective when taken as long as 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex. After taking Plan B, you should have a period within 2-3 weeks. But, in the meantime, do not have any further unprotected intercourse.
Whether or not you can begin the patch right away will depend on your practitioner. Some clinicians prefer that you wait until after your period to start birth control. Others will advise you to begin it that day. Discuss Plan B and a patch start date with your doctor.
